Project overview

The Town of Milton received $122,112 in funding which was used to conduct an independent review of the Milton Fire & Rescue Services (MFRS) Communications Centre, to provide recommendations that supports the federally mandated transition to an integrated Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) system.

The review included the following:

  • A detailed overview of current regulations, requirements or mandates required by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), applicable to the MFRS Communications Centre and required for full NG9-1-1 compatibility
  • Localized mapping of the current communications and dispatch infrastructure, applications and operational processes within the scope of NG9-1-1 with actionable recommendations for aligning to NG9-1-1 requirements
  • Development of a high level network design that could align to NG9-1-1 standards and requirements
  • Development of a schedule to change, upgrade or replace necessary/critical 9-1-1 infrastructure or applications in line with mandated CRTC NG9-1-1 deadlines
  • Estimated capital and operational costs
  • Anticipated impacts to existing and future service levels
  • Detailed infrastructure, technology and process requirements for future delivery models.

Summary of benefits

The benefits realized are:

  • Development of a roadmap with key considerations and a market analysis of technology and infrastructure providers which can be utilized by any Communication Centre who needs to prepare for the mandated NG9-1-1 integration
  • Identification of range of options for the Town of Milton to consider during planning and implementation with associated financial and service level benefits and deficits
  • Identification of necessary technology upgrades with anticipated costs which will support future rollout

The completion of this review supports Milton Fire & Rescue Services in making significant process in planning for the transition to NG9-1-1 which has been federally mandated by March 31, 2025.
